Miami Marlins make a bizarre off-season mistake
J.D. Davis ended up signing with the Oakland Athletics
I'm still trying to get over what happened a few days ago.... the Oakland Athletics signed 3B J.D. Davis for 1 year/$2.5 million (with $1 million in incentives). $2,5 million!! That's it. The Miami Marlins could've used him for the DH/bench mix and I even wrote about it earlier. He should probably be on a pretty unfavorable list of unsigned free agents that The Fish should've signed.
J.D. Davis will be playing third base for the Oakland Athletics in the 2024 season.
J.D. Davis didn't impress much with the Houston Astros, who he played with from 2017 to 2018. Later, Houston traded Davis to the New York Mets. Davis played for the Mets from 2019 to 2022, putting up the best stats of his career up to this point so far. In the period of 2019 to 2021, he batted a pretty solid .288/.373/.472, in 269 games and 779 AB. He even hit 22 home runs in 2019, in the notorious "juiced ball" season.
J.D. Davis batted .248/.340/.418 with the San Francisco Giants and the Mets in 2022, with 12 home runs and 35 RBI, in 115 games and 318 AB. He played his final season with San Francisco in 2023, when he batted .248/.325/.413, with 18 home runs and 69 RBI, in 144 games and 480 AB. He's been pretty bad defensively, which may be why San Francisco wasn't keen on keeping him on the bench. He may not be a defensive wizard, but he has an interesting bat. He does technically have the ability to hit around .280 with 20 or so home runs.
I'm most impressed by his Exit Velocity, 92.4 in 2022 and 91.1 last season. He also has a career 91.1 EV. I don't understand why The Fish couldn't bring him in for the DH/bench him. Is Bruce Sherman's budget for the team that low? Was Peter Bendix not able to spend a few extra million?! I really hope that there's some meaning to all of this. I'm definitely not happy that the Miami Marlins weren't even after him. Oakland and the Mets were apparently the teams most after him according to the reports.
