Miami Marlins move on from another starting pitcher
It's getting closer to the Trade Deadline, with the Miami Marlins getting ready to sell. I personally would love to see The Fish also add with an eye for the long-term. For now though, we have to focus on the players going out. One of those players hasn't even been traded, he's been DFA'd instead. I'm talking about SP Yonny Chirinos. He's just been designated for assignment, why?
The Miami Marlins are moving on from starting pitcher Yonny Chirinos.
Yonny Chirinos wasn't a key member of the Miami Marlins rotation. He was really a depth starter, who was only starting due to injuries to the other pitchers. The righty has been worth just -0.1 WAR this season and clearly hasn't been much of an asset to the team.
Yonny Chirinos pitched for the Tampa Bay Rays from 2018 to 2022. During that time he was actually pretty productive. He produced a 3.54 ERA/4.07 FIP, with 7.6 K/9 and 2.2 BB/9 in 49 games (29 games started) and 241.1 innings pitched. That was of course solid production, though his FIP and strikeout rate clearly gave him a bit of a ceiling. This wasn't an ace in the making or anything like that.
Chirinos split the 2023 season between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Atlanta Braves. He was rather disappointing this time out, as he produced a 5.40 ERA/5.43 FIP, with 5.6 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 in what was clearly a terrible season for him. So far this season for the Miami Marlins, he delivered a 6.30 ERA/6.11 FIP, with 7.5 K/9 and 3.9 BB/9 in 6 games and 30.0 innings pitched.
It's obviously not a shock that his numbers this season have been a disaster. He's been terrible and his control has been poor. The only upside here is that at least his strikeout rate wasn't abysmal. It's safe to say that The Fish will not miss the 30 year old righty. I expect that he won't be claimed by any team, and will go back to the Minor Leagues as pitching depth once again. It's a move that makes sense.
