Miami Marlins notes: Andriese, division rival news
The Miami Marlins are looking ahead to the Trade Deadline. Multiple Fish players are in trade discussions and some not the ones that we want to see traded at all. As we continue to stumble through this poor season, it makes sense to look at some transactions that recently took place. One transaction involves Fish's relief pitcher Matt Andriese, while the other involves the New York Mets and relief pitcher Phil Maton.
The Miami Marlins and the New York Mets made some transactions recently.
Let's start with The Fish... righty relief pitcher Matt Andriese has been demoted down to AAA Jacksonville. That was hardly a surprise. Andriese delivered a pitiful 6.00 ERA/5.67 FIP, with an intriguing 10.5 K/9 and 1,5 BB/9, in 4 games and 6.0 innings pitched. The 34 year old didn't have much of a track record before this. From 2015 to 2021 he pitched for the Tampa Bay Rays, Arizona Diamondbacks, Los Angeles Angels, Boston Red Sox and the Seattle Mariners (in that order).
During that time, Andriese delivered a cumulative 4.63 ERA/4.21 FIP, with 8.4 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9, in 217 games and 509.0 innings pitched. As solid as the strikeout rate has looked, it's not hard to see that there just wasn't much else to be excited about. He will likely get another call-up to the team at some point this season, and hopefully will do better in the ERA department.
The Miami Marlins' division rivals the New York Mets added bullpen depth from the Tampa Bay Rays. The 31 year old righty has a 4.58 ERA/5.63 FIP, with 7.6 K/9 and 4.6 BB/9, in 40 games and 35.1 innings pitched. He doesn't look good at first glance, but he did have a 3.00 ERA for the Houston Astros last season, in 68 games and 66.0 innings pitched. He did this with a great 10.1 K/9 rate, with 3.4 BB/9.
It's not pleasing to see the Miami Marlins miss the playoffs this season, while the Mets are at least fighting to make them, and in a solid position to potentially do so.
