Miami Marlins star Jazz Chisholm Jr. might be traded
This is a tough time to be a Miami Marlins fan. Many fans want more transparency from ownership amidst a losing season, and injuries have ravaged the starting rotation. We're now headed towards the All-Star break hoping for something to look forward to. It certainly looks like that something will be a flurry of trades by the trade deadline. A new report has some perhaps unsettling news on CF Jazz Chisholm Jr. and his future.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. may be on his way out of the Miami Marlins.
Who is Jazz Chisholm Jr.? Is he a burgeoning superstar on the verge of fully breaking out? According to some of his peers, he may be vastly overrated. I personally see him as a talented player who has been unlucky with the injuries. Jazz has been working to improve last off-season and he's been healthy so far. Who is he though?
Jazz has never played a full season in the Major Leagues. In the shortened 2020 season, he batted .161/.242/.321, with 2 home runs and 6 RBI in 21 games and 56 AB. That was dreadful, but he improved on this production in 2021. That season, he batted .248/.303/.425, with 18 home runs and 53 RBI in 124 games and 464 AB. That was clearly an improvement and gave some optimism for him going forward.
In 2022, he batted .254/.325/.535, with 14 home runs and 45 RBI in just 60 games and 213 AB. That was an improvement, but he missed too much time. In 2023, Jazz batted .250/.304/.457, with 19 home runs and 51 RBI in 97 games and 352 AB. This season (as of 07/09), he's batting .255/.326/.407, with 10 home runs and 40 RBI in 87 games and 329 AB. He's been worth 0.9 WAR.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. is making around $2.3 million this year and is a free agent after the 2026 season. Is he an extension candidate? He probably needs to prove better health first. We still don't know how he will do over the course of a full season. We don't even know what he wants. We also don't know if Peter Bendix wants to keep him or how high he'd go to extend him.
We do know that the Seattle Mariners have been linked to him. We also know that the Pittsburgh Pirates and Kansas City Royals are teams to watch on him as well. I'm not a fan of trading him, but I need to know how he'll do in a full season, his contract expectations for an extension and what the Miami Marlins can get for him in a trade.
