Miami Marlins starting pitcher is back and there's hope for more
The Miami Marlins are full of starting pitching injuries. Not that any of them were likely to make the All-Star Game... It was therefore great news to see Edward Cabrera return to the Major League team! He wasn't exactly great against the Chicago White Sox, but can he finally take things to the next level? Let's take a serious look and find that out...
Edward Cabrera will finally try to live up to the old hype with the Miami Marlins.
Edward Cabrera was a former top prospect who is still an unfinished product. Will the 2024 season be the year where he will finally show us what he's capable of? Cabrera debuted in 2021 with a 5.81 ERA/6.63 FIP, with 9.6 K/9 and 6.5 BB/9 in 7 games and 26.1 innings pitched. The strikeout rate was great, but certainly not the walk rate, or the other marks for that matter.
The 2022 season saw Cabrera seemingly break out. The 24 year old delivered a sparkling 3.01 ERA, with a sadly less impressive 4.59 FIP. He also had a worse but still solid 9.4 K/9 and an improved but still below average 4.1 BB/9. He did this in 14 games and 71.2 innings pitched.
Could he do even better in 2023? The question sadly was answered negatively. He delivered a 4.24 ERA/4.43 FIP, with 10.7 K/9 and 6.0 BB/9 in 22 games and 99.2 innings pitched. The FIP was down, but the ERA was worse. The strikeout rate was elite, but the walk rate was terrible.
The current 2024 season, saw Edward Cabrera deliver a 6.84 ERA/4.37 FIP, with an improved 12.6 K/9 and an improved but still terrible 5.4 BB/9. It's pretty clear, that he has the ability to be an ace based on the strikeout rate, but the control rate is very worrying. He's also currently at 6 games and 25.0 innings pitched for the season. He needs to prove that he can handle a full season's workload as well.
Edward Cabrera is in his age-26 season, so time is running out on him proving that he can be a good enough arm in the rotation.
