Miami Marlins notes: De Geus, Xavier, Baumann
The Miami Marlins are busy calling up prospects and working out the team's next contending core. The team recently shook up the roster, so let's take a look at what changes have actually been made. One of the moves is of course the call-up of OF Griffin Conine. I'm very excited to see how he does as he could be a late-bloomer.
The Miami Marlins made some roster moves to shake things up.
Right-handed pitcher Mike Baumann has recently been claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels. He's now on the active roster. Baumann pitched since 2021 for the Baltimore Orioles, San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Angels. He has a career 4.80 ERA/4.71 FIP, with 7.6 K/9 and 4.0 BB/9 in 123 games and 153.2 innings pitched. I really don't have any expectations for him, he seems more like a depth arm that will be used in long relief.
Another righty relief pitcher Brett De Geus has been demoted to the Minor Leagues. He has a 6.35 ERA/3.34 FIP with 6.4 K/9 and 3.2 BB/9, in 7 games and 5.2 innings pitched. This is a very small sample size and the ERA is of course atrocious. The FIP on the other hand is pretty good. It makes me think that he deserved more of a shot in the Major Leagues. The 26 year old has a career 7.17 ERA/4.83 FIP, with 7.2 K/9 and 4.1 BB/9, in 58 games and 59.0 innings pitched.
SS Xavier Edwards is however going on the 10-day IL with mild back extensor soreness. This is disappointing news and I really hope that he recovers as soon as possible. The breakout star is batting .349/.428/.436, with a home run and 17 RBI in 47 games and 172 AB. He's playing solid defense and has overall been worth 2.0 WAR. It's pretty clear that he's become a core piece and is under control through the 2029 season. I wish him a speedy recovery and can't wait to see him back in the lineup very soon.
The Miami Marlins should be better next season, but for now we can just see glimpses of a brighter future.
