Miami Marlins Spring Training player to watch - Troy Johnston
This is his year!
The Miami Marlins currently have a need for a DH and backup first baseman and Troy Johnston can easily fill that role. The Marlins minor league Player of the Year Troy Johnston will have an opportunity to show he can be the DH the Marlins need in Spring Training. If Johnston can continue his hot hitting from 2023 he will be that guy and should be fun to watch.
Troy Johnston will be a big time roster contender in 2024
Johnston had a monster 2023 season putting together a 31 game on base streak and hitting 26 home runs while swiping 24 bags. In 512 at-bats Johnston hit 36 doubles, 5 triples, drove in 116 runs, while slashing .307/.399/.549 with an OPS at .948. Johnston is a career .289 hitter and if he can hit around the same this Spring Training he will be a good asset if he also displays the same power.
Johnston would fill a role vacated by Yuli Gurriel at the end of the season and he will certainly have a good shot at earning that spot. Johnston is able to play outfield when needed and has played right field in the Dominican Winter League this season.
He could very well have the potential to be a big time Rookie this year if he makes the roster. Johnston showed big league power in AAA Jacksonville hitting .323 and 8 home runs in 198 at-bats. I’m looking forward to seeing him launch some in Spring Training.
Historically, last year was his best season and if he is with the Marlins he can also get some hitting tips from the savvy veteran Josh Bell, who also went off this past year with the Marlins. The first game is February 24th at 1pm so set your reminder in your phone it should be a fun game to watch.
