Miami Marlins Trade Deadline notes
Are you ready for the Trade Deadline next week? The Miami Marlins already made a depth move for the bullpen, and then a bigger move yesterday. Of course more work has to be done and there are quite a few trade ideas for the team to do. Let's take a look at some of the news regarding The Fish...
The Miami Marlins may no longer have a need for a starting pitcher.
Sandy Alcantara has not been having that great of a season, but has finally turned this around in his last start. This makes a need for an inning eating starting pitcher less of a necessity. If he's back to his Cy Young form and is pitching complete games, the bullpen won't be overtaxed. Jesús Luzardo is pitching like an ace; Braxton Garrett has a 3.67 FIP; Edward Cabrera has enough upside to keep getting starts; Johnny Cueto is coming off of a very good start of his own, and Eury Pérez is on his way back.
The Fish still need another middle of the order bat, but one ideal option is now definitely no longer an option. The Los Angeles Angels will not be trading SP/DH Shohei Ohtani. I know that it was extremely unlikely for the Miami Marlins to acquire him, but we're living at a time when the San Diego Padres are signing top free agents. Unexpected trades happen, and Ohtani to The Fish would've been a huge splash.
The Angels are almost certainly not going to the playoffs this season, and with Ohtani's desire to play for a winning team... He's not re-signing with them even if they finally make the playoffs for the first time in his career. He's moving on to a better team and they're just getting a draft pick in return. I know it was unlikely, but Ohtani being traded to Miami would've been amazing.
The Miami Marlins should focus on acquiring a middle of the order bat and on getting more bullpen help. Things are continuing to look interesting as the Trade Deadline is coming closer.
