More Trade Deadline news for the Marlins and division rivals
What a Trade Deadline! The Miami Marlins received a haul from the Baltimore Orioles and parted ways with another player earlier. Guess what? We have even MORE news coming our way! A small trade with the Seattle Mariners involving relief pitcher JT Chargois and more, such as another bullpen move and another rotation deal for the New York Mets. The above deals flew a bit under the radar.
More Trade Deadline deals involving the Miami Marlins and division rivals
Are you ready for more news?! Let's start with The Fish sending JT Chargois to Seattle. It's not a move that's going to make much of a difference for either team. Seattle certainly is unlikely to benefit all of that much. Chargois is a journeyman 33 year old, who came to the Miami Marlins after spending 2016-2022 with the Minnesota Twins, Los Angeles Dodgers, Seattle Mariners and Tampa Bay Rays. Throughout that time, he delivered a 3.54 ERA/3.87 FIP, with 9.1 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9.
Chargois debuted with The Fish in the 2023 season, delivering a solid 3.61 ERA/3.80 FIP, with and underwhelming 7.4 K/9 and 3.8 BB/9, in 46 games and 42.1 innings pitched. He followed that up this season with a 1.62 ERA/5.32 FIP, with 6.5 K/9 and 3.8 BB/9 in 15 games and 16.2 innings pitched. It's clear that he's just an average reliever. Minor League RHP Will Schomberg is coming back in return. He has an elite "breaking ball spin" but is largely unproven. It's still a good deal for The Fish.
Looking at what other relief pitchers are bringing back, Andrew Chafin was sent from the Detroit Tigers to the Texas Rangers. Chafin has a 3.16 ERA/2.53 FIP, with 12.2 K/9 and 3.9 BB/9 in 41 games and 37.0 innings pitched. Texas sent pitching prospects RHP Joseph Montalvo and RHP Chase Lee. Montalvo is Texas's #19 prospect, but the return was clearly weak considering Chafin's performance this season.
How about the New York Mets? The Fish's division rivals acquired SP Paul Blackburn from the Oakland Athletics for Minor League RHP Kade Morris. Blackburn is more of a depth starter with a career 4.83 ERA/4.36 FIP, with 6.9 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9. Morris is the Mets' #26 prospect. It's a pretty middling return, but it's basically a depth move.
