Saturday saw a major trade go down between the Miami Marlins and the New York Yankees. I guess another trade can't be ruled out anymore either. This trade has naturally received a lot of backlash and a lot of concern, as well as hope for the future from Marlins fans. It's probably not going to be the only time I'll talk about this, but here we go....
The Miami Marlins ended the Jazz Chisholm Jr. era on Saturday
It's still hard to process what happened. In fact, I'll start with the return. C/1B Agustin Ramirez is the #20 prospect on the Bronx Bombers and has a lot of potential with his bat. He probably won't end up at catcher long-term, and he does have issues with hitting breaking balls. That said, he has potential and is a nice addition to the farm.
Another player going to The Fish is 2B/SS Jared Serna. Serna was the #11 prospect on the Yankees, but will now be one of the top prospects in The Fish's farm. Serna is a versatile IF who has good speed, so he might end up as a second baseman in the future. SS is not really a position that he's suitable for.
The final prospect sent back is 3B Abrahan Ramirez. Ramirez is an unranked mostly fringe prospects, but with a ton of upside. I'm actually most excited about him and his potential down the line.
What about Jazz Chisholm Jr.? The CF has had a tumultuous time with the Miami Mralins. He developed a reputation as injury-prone and had not played a full season with the team. This season wa slooking to be the one when he would however. He batted .245/.305/.452 from 2020 to 2023. This season, he was batting .249/.323/.407, with 13 home runs and 50 RBI in 101 games and 386 AB.
I'm not sure what to say right now. Was he an extension candidate? That depends on what he expected to be paid and him staying healthy this season. He has a lot of upside, but he may never be the star he was projected to be. Then again he might just become one elsewhere. What he does in the future and how the prospects develop, will tell us how the trade comes out for the Miami Marlins.
