Did the Miami Marlins make the right call last off-season? The Fish chose to sign Tim Anderson instead of Amed Rosario, with Peter Bendix seemingly finding it to be a good deal. Anderson was signed for $5 million, compared to the $1.5 million that the Tampa Bay Rays paid to sign Rosario. The price difference is something to consider based on their production last year.

Did the Miami Marlins make the right decision to sign Tim Anderson instead of Amed Rosario?

Tim Anderson is currently batting. 250/.288/.276, with 0 home runs and 4 RBI, in 22 games and 76 AB. He is currently worth 0.0 AR, with a decent 0.1 dWAR. Last season, Anderson batted an abysmal .245/.286/.296 with a home run and 25 RBI, in 123 games and 493 AB. He was worth a terrible -2.0 WAR and an atrocious -0.9 dWAR. That said, he was worth 16.3 WAR from 2018 to 2022. He batted 3.7 dWAR and batted .297/.329/.455 throughout that time.

Amed Rosario is currently batting .359/.367/.526, with 2 home runs and 12 RBI, in 21 games and 78 AB. He is currently worth 0.4 WAR and -0.6 dWAR (he hasn't however played SS this season). It's pretty obvious that this production isn't sustainable. His BABIP is currently .387. Last season, Rosario batted .263/.305/.378 in 142 games and 510 AB, with 6 home runs and 58 RBI. His defense has been largely panned for years. Playing SS for the Cleveland Guardians last season, his dWAR was an abysmal -1.1.

To sum it all up, Amed Rosario is a poor defender at SS who no team even was willing to sign as a starter. Tampa Bay actually signed him as a bench player, but he's been playing in RF. It doesn't seem like a good idea to have signed him to play SS. The difference in salary between the two is also based on one being a starting SS (Anderson) and the other a utility player (Rosario). The Miami Marlins were also signing the better player with more upside based on track record. The decision to sign Tim Anderson was the right one.
