The Miami Marlins pursued many different players at the Trade Deadline, however not everyone was acquired. One player that was acquired however is starting pitcher/relief pitcher Ryan Weathers from the San Diego Padres. He wasn't exactly great over there, but was he potentially a "change of scenery" candidate? That's something that we wont find out until later on, but so far things aren't looking great.
The Miami Marlins demoted Ryan Weathers to the Minor Leagues.
Ryan Weathers has been worth an astoundingly bad -1.0 WAR this season. He debuted in 2021 with the San Diego Padres, an delivered a 5.32 ERA/5.44 FIP, with 6.8 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 in 30 games and 94.2 innings pitched. This was far from a promising debut. In fact, there was really nothing positive here at all. He was still just 21 years old, so San Diego wanted to see if he could do better than this.
In 2022, Ryan Weathers followed up his disappointing debut with a 9.82 ERA/4.75 FIP, with 7.5 K/9 and 9.8 BB/9. Yes you read that right. He had 9.8 BB/9. He did this in just a game and 3.2 innings pitched, so the small sample size surely has to be put under consideration here. That said, there was little promise to see here.
Pitching for San Diego this season prior to bein traded to The Fish, Weathers delivered a 6.25 ERA/5.79 FIP, with 5.8 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 in 12 games and 44.2 innings pitched. So far pitching for the Miami Marlins, he has a 14.73 ERA/10.90 FIP, with 12.3 K/9 and 9.8 BB/9 in a game and 3.2 innings pitched. Yeah.... I like the strikeouts but I fail to see anything positive about him. I don't know if he'll ever be good enough to stick in the Major Leagues.
Ryan Weathers has been demoted to the Minor Leagues, and it's unclear if he'll be back on the Miami Marlins this season. Taking his place is righty relief pitcher Geoff Hartlieb. Hartlieb has a 9.00 ERA/15.26 FIP, with 18.0 K/9 and 9.0 BB/9 in a game and an inning pitched.
