The Miami Marlins may finally trade this former ace
If there's one good thing about the Miami Marlins going forward, it's the embarrassment of riches in the rotation. Just imagine what we have next year when everyone's healthy: Sandy Alcantara,Eury Perez, Jesus Luzardo, Max Meyer and Ryan Weathers. There's also Edward Cabrera as well as Roddery Munoz in the mix. Who is missing? The oft-injured Trevor Rogers.
The Miami Marlins will likely trade starting pitcher Trevor Rogers.
It seems so long ago, but there was a point in time when Trevor Rogers looked to be an actual ace alongside Sandy Alcantara. Back in 2021, he delivered a 2.64 ERA/2.55 FIP, with 10.6 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9, in 25 games and 133.0 innings pitched. He was so good that he was an All-Star and finished second in NL Rookie of the Year voting.
It's sad that it ended up being the peak of Rogers' career. He wasn't the same from 2022-2023, missing significant time due to injury, and only being able to pitch in 27 games and 125.0 innings over those two seasons. That's less than what a starting pitcher is expected to deliver in just one season. The production wasn't much better either. He delivered an abysmal 5.26 ERA/4.32 FIP, with 9.0 K/9 and 3.7 BB/9.
This season, Trevor Rogers is sitting on a 4.82 ERA/4.42 FIP, with 7.5 K/9 and 4.1 BB/9 in 18 games and 89.2 innings pitched. He does however have a 3.58 ERA in his last 27.2 innings pitched over the last four weeks. I could see some contending teams having interest in him and seeing some upside with him. The 26 year old is a free agent after the 2026 season and is clearly young enough to potentially take some steps forward.
It would be unrealistic to expect the Miami Marlins to receive a big return for Rogers, but even some "lottery pick" prospects would be nice. Perhaps, we can even dream of a mid-tier prospect or two? Trevor Rogers hasn't been consistent enough or healthy enough to warrant an extension, so a good return might be worth a trade.
