The Miami Marlins may have a tough decision to make on a pitcher
While the season may not be going so well for the Miami Marlins, there's some good news. Ryan Weathers just had a great start against the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday. The Fish won 1-0 in the 10'th inning. Weathers was phenomenal, accumulating 4 strikeouts and giving up 3 hits in 8 innings. That's Weathers though, Trevor Rogers is another story. He did have a great start yesterday, but...
It might be getting close to the Miami Marlins cutting ties with Trevor Rogers.
Trevor Rogers debuted in 2020 with a 6.11 ERA/4.33 FIP, with 12.5 K/9 and 4.2 BB/9 in 7 games and 28.0 innings pitched. The strikeout rate was great, but the rest was concerning. The following season was the one that made Rogers very important for The Fish. It's still sad that it was never the same after due to numerous injuries. In 2021, Rogers produced a 2.64 ERA/2.55 FIP with 10.6 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9, in 25 games and 133.0 innings pitched.
Rogers was great in 2021, but injuries kept him from ever reaching that level again. In 2022, Rogers produced a disappointing 5.47 ERA/4.35 FIP, with 8.9 K/9 and 3.8 BB/9, in 23 games and 107.0 innings pitched. In 2023, Rogers could only get through 4 games, producing a 4.00 ERA/4.09 FIP with an improved 9.5 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9, in 18.0 innings pitched.
So far this season, Trevor Rogers has a 5.79 ERA, with 7.5 K/9 and 4.1 BB/9 in 9 games and 42.0 Iinnings pitched. Rogers' FIP's tend to be in the 4.00+ range, so they're pretty much consistent. The ERA's however have been pretty abysmal. You can blame the defense, but then there's another issue...he had a 94.6 MPH fastball in 2021 and 2022. In 2023 however, it was down to 93.4 and this season it's now at 92.3. It's possible that injuries ruined Rogers' once really good arm.
Can the 26 year old be trusted to stay healthy and productive going forward? He has a $1.5 million salary this season, which will actually rise next season. It's still a relatively cheap salary, but is he much better than a pre-arb pitcher at this point? Unless Trevor Rogers improves this season, it certainly looks like it could be his last season on the Miami Marlins.
