The Miami Marlins trading Jazz Chisholm Jr. was actually the right move
I was stunned and saddened when the Miami Marlins traded CF Jazz Chisholm Jr. to the New York Yankees by the Trade Deadline. I thought of 3 reasons why the trade happened, but it still didn't make me feel any better about it. One of my favorite players was no longer on the team and I kept wondering why extending him wasn't the better choice. I'm now in full support of the trade.
The Miami Marlins made the right call with Jazz Chisholm Jr.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. had been one of my favorite Miami Marlins players for years, and I was very sad to see him go. The more I think about it though, the more I'm fine with him being traded. A big reason for me had been seeing him get injured again. I hate to call anyone "Injury-prone", but since his debut in 2020 he's never been able to play a full season. He seems to get injured and miss significant time every season. How can we possibly trust him to stay healthy and productive?
I'm also pretty sure that with Jazz's confidence, he would want to receive a contract in the $100 million+ range. I don't see him settling for a "hometown discount" or for being paid based on current production. He would want to be paid as an MVP contender, as he definitely sees himself as someone capable of doing just that. I just don't see his production being worth that cost.
Another big reason for why I changed my mind on the trade, is that every time I look at his stats...it's just not impressive. He never had that one big season with the Miami Marlins. Just take a look at his batting lines over the years:
2020: .161/.242/.321
2021: .248/.303/.425
2022: .254/.325/.535
2023: .250/.304/.457
2024: .249/.323/.407 (Marlins) and .257/.328/.445 overall.
Do you see the problem now too? None of those batting lines are impressive. The 2022 one comes closest, but the batting average is low and the OBP is just average. He never even reached 20 home runs in a season until this season. His highest RBI total is 61 from 2023.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. is a talented player and a nice guy. That said, he's too injury-prone and unproductive (partly due to injuries). The Miami Marlins sold high by trading him as he got injured soon after the trade.
