Trade Deadline notes that affect the Marlins
The Miami Marlins have already made a blockbuster trade and more are likely on the way. Other players are seemingly on the way out as well. In the meantime, other teams are busy making trades and this includes The Fish's division rivals as well. It makes sense to take a look at some important deals and to get an idea of how things look like going forward.
The Miami Marlins are affected by the Trade Deadline this year.
One trade that I've been meaning to talk about is the Philadelphia Phillies strengthening their bullpen. They acquired Carlos Estevez from the Los Angeles Angels for Minor League pitchers George Klassen and Samuel Aldegheri. Klassen was the #5 prospect in Philly's system and Aldegheri their seventh.
This is a massive overpay for a closer who has a career 4.29 ERA and 4.05 FIP. Last season, he had a 3.90 ERA/3.94 FIP in 63 games and 62.1 innings pitched. This season he has a much better 2.38 ERA/2.85 FIP in 34 games and 34.0 innings pitched. I don't think that he'll keep this up however just based on track record and him already being 31. Philly's bullpen projects to be their weakest area in the playoffs, and the area that can ultimately cost them the pennant.
Another key trade didn't involve any of the Marlins' division rivals, but it did involve the St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Dodgers. St. Louis could be dangerous in future seasons for The Fish, as they traded the expendable Tommy Edman for SP Erick Fedde from the Chicago White Sox. Fedde has been excellent this season with a 3.11 ERA and 8.0 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9 in 21 games and 121.2 innings pitched this season. The downside is of course his 3.76 FIP.
The Los Angeles Dodgers get Edman and relief pitcher Michael Kopech from the Chicago White Sox. Chicago get prospects 2B Jeral Perez, 3B Alexander Albertus and pitcher Noah Miller. The trade made sense for the rebuilding White Sox, improved St. Louis's rotation and improved LA's depth.
The New York Mets did well to upgrade their own depth by acquiring OF Jesse Winker from the Washington Nationals for Minor League RHP Tyler Stuart. This is more of a short-term upgrade but it's interesting to watch some of the Miami Marlins' rivals depleting their farms.
