Unbelievable news about the Miami Marlins ace
The Miami Marlins and more specifically Peter Bendix, made a big decision for the off-season. The decision? Ace Sandy Alcantara will not be traded this off-season. That sadly doesn't guarantee that he won't be traded at the Trade Deadline, but there's hope. The lineup is looking better for next season, and with better health and three Wild Card spots, one can start dreaming...
Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara could've come back this season.
Sandy Alcantara is the face of the Miami Marlins franchise. The 2022 season has been the highlight of the ace's career. He won the NL Cy Young award for his performance that season. He pitched to a 2.28 ERA/2.99 FIP, with 8.1 K/9 and 2.0 BB/9 in 228.2 innings pitched. He was the best pitcher in the game. He wasn't as good in the 2023 season due to an injury that would lead to Tommy John Surgery.
From 2020-2022, Sandy was a workhorse who pitched in 72 games and 476.1 innings pitched. He pitched to a 2.74 ERA/3.24 FIP, with 8.4 K/9 and 2.2 BB/9. He was a completely different pitcher in the 2023 season. This time he pitched to a 4.14 ERA/4.03 FIP, with 7.4 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in 28 games and 184.2 innings pitched. It was clear that something was wrong and then he needed surgery...
Sandy Alcantara is a true competitor, who actually wanted to return to the mound this season! Sandy is ahead of schedule and apparently wants to return this season! Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker had this to say:
“I think if we would have this second-half playoff push, I think you could see him fighting to get out there. But I do feel like he understands where we're at, and it makes no sense to try to push it harder right now, especially him being who he is, to get back out there. He understands that 2025 is kind of the focus, and this is part of the progression. He looks really, really good. He'd be our best pitcher right now, probably, just how good he looked in his bullpen.”
Sandy Alcantara is already at 96 mph with his fastball! He will likely be on an innings count next season, but even a less than usual amount of innings from him is enough to make a difference. The Miami Marlins are a significantly better team when Sandy's Beach is open for business.
