Various Marlins notes; interest in surprise player and more
Are you getting tired of the Miami Marlins claiming players? It seems that now that the Trade Deadline has passed The Fish are busy claiming players left and right. Well...why stop while the iron is hot am I right? That's not all.... It turns out that Peter Bendix was also targeting long-term pieces to add as well!
The Miami Marlins could've had a busier Trade Deadline...
The Miami Marlins were looking into an intra-division trade with the New York Mets. The target? None other than recently demoted to the Minor Leagues third baseman Brett Baty. Baty lost his spot at the third baseman of the Mets' future, but The Fish were willing to see if a change of scenery would unlock some of his supposed potential. From 2022-2024, the 24 year old has batted .215/.282/.325, with 15 home runs and 55 RBI in a sample size of 169 games and 544 AB.
I personally don't see much there. His Exit Velocity has dropped annually from 91.1 t0 85.7. I'm not sure if he has some hidden growth there. He does have a nice 9.4 BB% and a decent enough 24.6 K%. I don't know what he has to offer, but who knows as he's still young enough to improve in his career. He was also the 12'th pick of the 2019 draft. Either way, it's probably pointless to think about as Peter Bendix didn't actually pull the trigger on a move. Despite the fact that the interest was supposedly pretty heavy.
Moving on to yet ANOTHER claimed and new Miami Marlins player...right-handed relief pitched Brett De Geus from the Seattle Mariners. Brett De Geus is a 33'rd round (yes this time it's a round), pick from 2017. From 2021 to 2024 with the Texas Rangers, Arizona Diamondbacks and the Seattle Mariners, the 26 year old had unimpressive results.
De Geus delivered an abysmal 7.26 ERA/4.99 FIP, with 7.3 K/9 and 4.2 BB/9 in 51 games and 53.1 innings pitched. Nothing about this is promising and I don't expet him to prove to be a hidden gem for The Fish.
