You'll never guess what the Miami Marlins did with the bullpen this time
The Fish continue to shuffle the bullpen mix
The Fish can't seem to stop making mistakes lately. I'm just hoping that somehow things will get easier as things go forward... The bullpen has been a disaster for the Miami Marlins and ONCE AGAIN the team is making changes. Considering how many games were blown by the 'pen (including yesterday), it's definitely an area that needs a lot of improvement.
The Miami Marlins bullpen keeps costing the team game after game.
The latest change that the Miami Marlins did, was demoting righty relief pitcher George Soriano. Soriano debuted with The Fish last season, delivering a 3.81 ERA/4.37 FIP, with 9.0 K/9 and 4.0 BB/9, in 26 games and 52.0 innings pitched. The strikeout rate was good, but the walk rate was below average and the ERA/FIP were nothing special.
This season, George Soriano has a 10.29 ERA/7.63 FIP, with 10.3 K/9 and 7.7 BB/9, in 8 games and 7.0 innings pitched. Ugh. While the strikeout rate is even better, there's no hiding how bad the rest of the numbers are. The 25 year old still has room to grow and I do hope that he does, but for now he's clearly not helping the team and is better off in the Minor Leagues.
Who is Soriano's replacement? The 26 year old righty relief pitcher Declan Cronin is back. Cronin debuted last season with the Chicago White Sox, delivering a 9.00 ERA/7.80 FIP, with 6.5 K/9 and 5.7 BB/9 in 9 games and 11.0 innings pitched. This season, he delivered a 1.69 ERA/3.58 FIP, with 8.4 K/9 and 6.8 BB/9 in 3 games and 5.1 innings pitched.
I'm not sure I'm particularly excited about Cronin. He has serious control issues and his ERA is obviously not very promising once you look at his FIP. I'm also not impressed by his strikeout rate. I want to believe that he will be better, but I just don't see it. It looks like constant shuffling to see what sticks and I'm not a fan of that. It would've been better to just sign higher upside relievers prior to the season. I guess shuffling is better than doing nothing though.
