Peter Bendix has been doing a good job with the Miami Marlins. The team hasn't been spending as it should however. As usual I hope that spending is going to happen in the near future. It seems to be the time for extensions, as the San Diego Padres and the Boston Red Sox are getting them done. This definitely makes you think....
Why don't the Miami Marlins take some advice from other teams?
The Miami Marlins are rebuilding and still seemingly looking to figure out who will compose the team's next core. The San Diego Padres are trying to contend and are of course ahead in their spending habits. They extended former top prospect and burgeoning superstar CF Jackson Merrill to a 9 year deal that can max out at $204 million. This is obviously a good deal, if Merrill follows up on his 4.4 WAR season in 2024.
The Boston Red Sox are also trying to contend, though unlike San Diego they haven't made the playoffs since the 2021 season. To be fair, they only truly started trying to win again since the off-season. That said, they gave out two big extensions already. They extended recently debuted top prospect second baseman Kristian Campbell for 8 years and $60 million. That's a major commitment in someone with so little experience, but can be a bargain if he lives up to the hype.
Boston also extended ace Garrett Crochet for 6 years/$170 million. He only had one good and healthy season so far, but he certainly looks like someone with the talent to be at the top of their rotation for at least the next few years.
Yet another extension that happened recently saw the Arizona Diamondbacks extend 2B Ketel Marte for $116.5 million through 2031. It's a major investment in a pretty good player. Looking at all of these extensions, one has to wonder when the Miami Marlins will follow suit and join this "club". It's frustrating to see The Fish not invest any money and to see these other teams do so in smaller markets.
