We can make a lot of predictions on what the Miami Marlins should do this off-season. So far, The Fish have really only made one Major League signing so far. In a remarkable turn of events, the Athletics are the first team in Major League history who are playing without representing a city or a state. The traditionally small-market team is also actually spending.
The Miami Marlins should be spending the way the Athletics are.
Not in a million years, did I ever see myself suggesting that the Miami Marlins should spend the way that the Athletics do. The Athletics are notoriously low spenders and don't even have a city to represent anymore. That is, until they presumably finalize their move to Las Vegas in a couple years. For whatever reason, they don't want to represent Sacramento, where they will be playing in the 2025 season.
The Athletics were better than expected in 2024 and actually had a busy off-season. They signed Luis Severino away from the New York Mets, for the rotation in a club record deal. They now extended RF Lawrence Butler to a good 7 year/$65.5 million deal. Butler broke out in the 2024 season, batting .262/.317/.490, with 22 home runs and 57 RBI in 125 games and 412 AB. He was worth 3.0 WAR for that performance. He's not a particularly good defender, but the bat certainly plays.
The fact that the Athletics are investing in their young players, which is a great move for the team's future. Why can't the Miami Marlins do the exact same thing? Why can't Peter Bendix start investing in long-term pieces? Why can't the team add at least some better players? Even if the plan will be to flip them at the Trade Deadline? Is it really that hard for The Fish to start investing in players for an actual sustainably winning future?
The Miami Marlins should be a bad team in 2025, but it's all about the future and buildng up the farm for a future of sustainable winning. It's time to start building now. What's the hold up?! Even the Athletics are spending more now!
