The Miami Marlins rotation could use some more arms. I find the current mix to be intriguing, but more arms wouldn't hurt, especially those who could even be flipped at the Trade Deadline for some prospects. Peter Bendix surely has to be looking to add at least one more right? Kyle Gibson is still out there for some reason for example, and he should be had for very cheap at this point.
Kyle Gibson should be signed by the Miami Marlins.
Why should the Miami Marlins sign Kyle Gibson? He's a proven locker room leader who can eat innings and take the toll from a rotation that doesn't include many "inning eaters". In the above linked articles, I make it clear that almost all the pitchers in the current rotation mix aren't proven to be able to pitch 150+ innings in a season. This means that it is quite essential to have more depth in the rotation mix.
Kyle Gibson was solid last season with the St. Louis Cardinals. He pitched to a 4.24 ERA/4.42 FIP, with 8.0 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9 in 30 games and 169.2 innings pitched. He was worth 0.9 WAR for that production. Those are not ace-like numbers and he's already 37 years old. In fact, he will turn 38 this season. That said, The Fish would not be expecting an ace, but simply an inning-eating arm as I said earlier.
Throughout his 12 year career, that included stints with the Minnesota Twins, Texas Rangers, Philadelphia Phillies, Baltimore Orioles and finally St. Louis Cardinals, Gibson pitched to a 4.24 ERA/4.42 FIP, with 8.0 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9 in 330 games. He's been durable and predictable, and while age is no longer on his side, there's no reason to think that he can't deliver a similar season in 2025, as to his usual norms.
Kyle Gibson would almost certainly be had on a one-year deal at a low salary. Something like a couple million should theoretically work. He made $12 million in 2024, but he certainly won't even come close to that number in 2025.
