The Miami Marlins need to replace injured starting pitchers and starting pitchers who were recently traded. With more arms off of the team's depth chart, it makes sense to see what the team currently has available. The Fish can still add arms before Spring Training, but let's see what the team has in-house at the moment. How does this mix look like?
The rotation mix for the Miami Marlins looks interesting.
Eury Perez will return at some point during the 2025 season after injury. Eury is a former top prospect with ace potential in the future. In 2024, he pitched to a 3.15 ERA/4.11 FIP, with an excellent 10.6 K/9 and a bit below average 3.1 BB/9, in 19 games and 91.1 innings pitched.
The Opening Day starter for the Miami Marlins in 2025 will be none other than former Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara. In 2023, he pitched to a 4.14 ERA/4.03 FIP, with 7.4 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in 28 games and 184.2 innings pitched. That wasn't as good as his 2022 performance, when he pitched to a 2.28 ERA/2.99 FIP, with 8.1 K/9 and 2.0 BB/9 in 32 games and 228.2 innings pitched.
Sandy will be followed in the rotation by Ryan Weathers. The former top prospect finally broke out in 2024. He pitched to a 3.63 ERA/4.11 FIP, with 8.3 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9 in 16 games and 86.2 innings pitched. I'm hoping that he can take another step forward in 2025.
Edward Cabrera will have another shot to stick in the rotation as well. Another former top prospect, Cabrera pitched to a 4.95 ERA/4.68 FIP, with 10.0 K/9 and 4.7 BB/9 in 20 games and 96.1 innings pitched. An elite strikeout artist, control has always been Cabrera's issue.
Max Meyer will have another shot at the rotation as well. He pitched to a 5.68 ERA/5.90 FIP, with 7.3 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9 in 11 games and 57.0 innings pitched. Valente Bellozo is also planned to be in the rotation. He broke out in the 2024 season, with a 3.67 ERA/5.73 FIP, with 5.8 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 in 13 games and 68.2 innings pitched. The FIP is very underwhelming, but the ERA was good.
It's clear that the Miami Marlins need to sign one or two starting pitchers to eat innings, as too many of these starters didn't pitch much last season. There's also a need to have more depth to protect from further injuries.
