We've been excited for a while! When would he finally make it up to the Major League team?! Well...the wait is finally over and top Miami Marlins prospect Agustin Ramirez is here! So far he's been doing better than expected too! This is becoming an increasingly exciting time for The Fish and the work that Peter Bendix has put into rebuilding the team. This isn't good for Nick Fortes however.
The Miami Marlins may have another new star on the team.
Nick Fortes hasn't seemed like a long-term piece for the Miami Marlins for a while. The catcher has a career batting line of .224/.277/.347 from 2021 to 2025. It's a large enough sample size, that it's becoming clear that he's not really someone who The Fish can rely on going forward.
Prior to getting injured, Fortes was batting .300/.333/.500, with 0 home runs and 3 RBI in 7 games and 20 AB. He's been good but the sample size is small, and sadly the one for his career is much longer. It's most likely that he won't keep this up all season long. The .400 BABIP gives that away.
Agustin Ramirez only played in 2 games and received just 8 AB. He's batting a ridiculous .833/.875/.1.333 with an RBI and 2 walks already. This is of course unsustainable, but shows a lot of promise going forward. He has a 91.9 EV and that matches the power that he's been showing throughout his Minor League career. I definitely see him keeping it up going forward.
What will happen when Nick Fortes comes back? I strongly suspect that Agustin will stay up in the Majors at catcher. I'm concerned about his defense, but it's important to keep his bat in the lineup and it's possible that he can play passable enough defense to make it work. It will of course remain to be seen how he will actually do. Fortes will likely end up relegated to backup catcher duty. I see this as a very likely result of what will happen in the next few months. These are exciting times for the Miami Marlins.
