Miami Marlins Index: Braves Edge Marlins as Latos Struggles

After a 1-5 opening home stand, the Miami Marlins traveled to Atlanta to start a 3-game series against the Braves. After two rain delays, the Braves edged the Marlins for a 3-2 victory in another poor outing for Mat Latos.

With Henderson Alvarez headed to the Disabled List, the Miami Marlins needed a strong start from Mat Latos. After a 52-minute rain delay, Latos’ first inning could not have gone any better. He retired the Braves in 1-2-3 order, even collecting his first strikeout of the season, a far cry from his 7 runs in 2/3’s of an inning last Tuesday.

Christian Yelich made a remarkable catch in the second inning, potentially saving two runs and then collected a run scoring ground out in the top of the 3rd inning to give the Marlins a 1-0 lead.

A second rain delay stopped the game after the third inning.

Play resumed after a 39-minute rain delay, with the Marlins sticking with Latos in the bottom of the fourth inning, despite the delay. After the delay, Latos got a well hit fly ball out, allowed a single, allowed a stolen base, walked a batter and threw a wild pitch that allowed the game to get tied. Salty threw out Andrelton Simmons and Latos struck out Cameron Maybin to end the inning, one which could have been much worse.

The Braves finally broke through on Latos in the 5th inning, as after a single and a really well hit double, manager Mike Redmond took the ball from Latos in favor of Sam Dyson. Dyson allowed back-to-back singles to allow the Braves to build a 3-1 lead, but was able to work out of a bases loaded, one out jam to avoid allowing the Braves to blow the game open.

In the ninth inning, the Miami Marlins were able to mount a comeback, but ultimately fell short. Martin Prado led the inning off with a double, before Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Marcell Ozuna struck out behind him. Adeiny Hechavarria lined a single to make it a one-run game before Jeff Baker struck out to end the game.

C-. Stats: 4.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO Latos made it through the first inning, and after his last start, that was a major victory for him. A Yelich catch saved two runs and the Braves were making good contact off of Latos all night, as he was leaving a lot of pitches up in the zone Latos’ key to the night was picking up strikeouts when he needed them the most. Latos missed a tag on the game tying run at home plate, which knocks down his grade as well. The 5 strikeouts were nice to see and his velocity was better than his last start, so there is something to build on there.. SP. Miami Marlins. MAT LATOS

C. Stats: 2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO Sam Dyson came into the game in a pressured packed situation, with runners on second and third, with nobody out in a tied ballgame. Back-to-back singles on first pitches from Dyson gave the Braves a 3-1 lead. After loading the bases, Dyson was able to induce a ground out to get out of the inning without further damage.. RP. Stats: 1/3 2B (1), BB, 2 SO After being benched on Sunday for being late, Marcell Ozuna had a strong at bat in the first and collected his first double of the season. He walked his second time up. A Marlin not named Christian Yelich getting on base twice in a game is pretty impressive this season. . CF. Miami Marlins. MARCELL OZUNA. B

LF. Miami Marlins. CHRISTIAN YELICH. B+. Stats: 0/3, RBI After his amazing catch in the second inning that saved at two runs, I didn’t care what Yeli did the rest of the game. He was getting a higher grade 41regardless. Half an inning after his amazing grab, Yelich drove in the Marlins first run of the game in the 3rd. Unfortunately, a hitless night and getting out with runners on base take away from Yelich’s grade.

Stats: 2/3, BB, R, RBI Adeiny Hechavarria doesn’t walk much. That was evident when he had to be told by the home plate umpire that he had to take his base after ball 4 in the 5th inning. He also collected just his second hit of the year in the 3rd inning. Hech corrected his second hit of the game in the 9th inning, driving in Prado to bring the Marlins within 1 run.. SS. F. Mike Redmond should not have allowed Mat Latos to come back into the game after the rain delay. He really should not have brought him back after his 4th inning. Alas, Red does not make the best decisions and he further exacerbated that bringing in a low leverage reliever like Sam Dyson in a tie game with runs being at a premium for the Marlins this season.. Miami Marlins. . D. Sigh, another loss for the Miami Marlins in 2015. The loss drops them to 1-6 and the 88 win plateau it could take to make the playoffs would now require the Fish to go 87-68 the rest. Do they have enough to do that? I’m not so sure..
