Miami Marlins: April 22nd Fish Farm Report

The Miami Marlins just got swept by the Brewers in Milwaukee. While that was happening, Miami’s minor league feeder system was busy putting up a 3-0 record. The present may be dim, but the future is looking bright. Let’s look at the transactions first.

Transactions

C Skyler Ewing was promoted from the Jupiter Hammerheads to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp.

1B Colby Lusignan was granted his release from the Jumbo Shrimp. Lusignan was hitting .200 this season. He had hit .258/.337/.413 in 176 minor league games at five levels of Miami’s system.

C Roy Morales was activated from the restricted list by the Jupiter Hammerheads. He had tested positive last season for an illegal substance.

C Chris Hoo was assigned to Jupiter from the Batavia Muckdogs.

Triple-A Pacific Coast League

New Orleans Baby Cakes vs. Oklahoma City Dodgers (postponed, rain)

The Baby Cakes and the Dodgers have rescheduled this contest for June 30th as the second game of a doubleheader. It’s now part of a six-game series.

Double-A Southern League

Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 11, Tennessee Smokies 5

In a road matchup in Smokies Stadium, the Shrimp (6-10) trounced the Smokies (8-8) with 3,764 in attendance.

Cody Poteet (1-1, 5.40) earned the victory, striking out four in six innings. He earned a quality start by allowing three runs on six hits and a walk, for a 51 GameScore. He got 56-of-78 pitches over the plate.

The Shrimp batted around in the first. Isan Diaz led off with a single, and Monte Harrison was hit by a pitch. Austin Dean loaded the bases on a single, then Eric Jagielo cleared them with a three-run double. Sharif Othman struck out after a John Norwood single put runners on the corners. Mason Davis singled Jagielo in, then Chris Diaz popped out for an infield-fly-rule. Poteet helped his own cause by singling in Norwood for an early 5-0 lead.

In the second inning, Harrison led off with a double and Dean smacked a two-run homer to make it 7-0, Crustaceans. The Smokies scored twice in the bottom of the inning to get back within five.

The score remained 7-2 until the fifth, when the Shrimp scored on a Davis RBI-triple and a Diaz RBI-single. The Smokies scored one in the bottom of the inning to make it 9-3.

In the sixth, Dean hit his second two-run homer of the day and of the season.

With the lead at 11-3, the Smokies added two in the bottom of the ninth to set the final score at 11-5. The Shrimp outhit the Smokies, 17-to-9. Dean added a single to his two round-trippers. Diaz, Harrison, Jagielo, Norwood, Davis, and Diaz each had two hits. Esmerling De La Rosa (S, 1) earned a nine-out save, striking out three and allowing two earned runs.

High-A Florida State League

Jupiter Hammerheads 1, St. Lucie Mets 0 (5)

Wei-Yin Chen (1-0, 1.17) made a rehab start for the Hammerheads (14-3), and limited the Mets (7-9) to two hits. He struck out seven in the rain-shortened five-inning contest, with 348 at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.

Chen earned a 73 GameScore, getting 60-of-73 pitches over the plate, an incredible 82.2% conversion rate. Each team collected a grand-total of two hits for the game. Stone Garrett drew one-of-three first inning walks against opposing starter Briam Campusano (0-1, 2.25), scoring Joe Dunand with the only run of the game.

Garrett later added a single, joining John Silviano as the only Hammerheads with a hit.

Single-A South Atlantic League

Greensboro Grasshoppers 3, Charleston RiverDogs 2

The visiting RiverDogs (7-10) got on top first with 5,025 at First National Bank Field. Chris Hess hit a sacrifice fly and Leonardo Molina added an RBI-triple for a 2-0 lead off of starter Brady Puckett. Puckett struck out five over seven innings, and didn’t allow another run after the first.

The score would remain, 2-0 until the bottom of the eighth. Aaron Knapp hit an RBI-single, Zach Sullivan scored on a Jose Devers non-RBI double play ball, and Isael Soto added an RBI-double to take a 3-2 lead.

Travis Neubeck (2-1, 0.00) earned the win, striking out two in a shutout one-hit eighth. Tyler Frohwirth earned his second save with a perfect ninth, striking out one.

The RiverDogs outhit the Hoppers, 8-to-7. No Greensboro player collected more than one hit in the game.

Later

Sandy Alcantara (0-0, 3.52) will start for the Baby Cakes at noon tomorrow against the Oklahoma City Dodgers in game two of what is now a two-game series.

Brandon Miller (0-0, 8.36) will start for the Grasshoppers on the road against the Hickory Crawdads (6-10). It’s game one of a four-game set, beginning at 6PM.

The Palm Beach Cardinals (9-8) will host the Hammerheads in game one of a three-game series starting at 6:30PM. Jupiter has not announced a starter as of this time.

The Jumbo Shrimp will lock horns with the hosting Smokies in game-three-of-five. Each team has won one game so far. Max Duval (0-1, 11.00) will start for Jacksonville.
