This offseason, Marlin Maniac is devoting an article for each player who appeared in the Miami Marlins system last year. This is Part 256 of 286.
Omar Augusto Lebron is a 6′, 175 lb. lefty-hitting and throwing outfielder and first baseman from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, population 965,040. There have been 177 major leaguers to have originated out of the city, including Jose Urena, Jarlin Garcia, and Manny Ramirez.
Lebron was born on April 11th, 1999, and on July 2nd, 2016 signed his first professional deal with the Miami Marlins through free agency. He was initially assigned to the rookie-level with the DSL Marlins, in the Dominican Summer League.
Lebron mostly acted as the DSL Marlins leadoff man, and hit .249/.388/.349 while appearing mostly at first base. He fielded .970 in that corner of the infield, making 12 errors in 399 total chances. Offensively, Lebron led the team with 67 games, 29 stolen bases (in 40 tries), 46 walks (against only 40 strikeouts), 60 runs, and three home runs. He also had 34 RBI.
Lebron totaled 16 multi-hit games for DSL, including three of three or more. On June 23rd, he hit three singles and a triple, scoring three runs and collecting a pair of RBI in an 11-10 loss to the DSL Royals. On July 5th, in a 10-9 victory opposite the DSL Braves, Lebron hit three singles and a double with a stolen base, three runs and three RBI. The club finished with a 40-29 record.

Lebron’s 2017 was impressive enough to merit a lateral promotion to the GCL Marlins, in the rookie-level, Florida-based Gulf Coast League. In 42 contests, he slashed .225/.312/.404 with a team-leading six homers and 17 RBI. He also drew 14 walks and struck out 38 times, and only attempted nine stolen bases, getting caught four times. Defensively, he fielded at a .984 clip in 22 games at first base. He also took 19 chances without an error in left field.
Lebron had nine two-hit games while in GCL. On July 23rd, he hit a two-run double and a solo home run in a 4-2 victory against the GCL Nationals. The GCL Marlins finished the season at 25-31.
Lebron’s 2018 performance didn’t make or break him as far as his probable future goes. Although still technically rostered with the GCL Marlins, look for him with the short-season-A Batavia Muckdogs in the New York-Penn League in 2019.
