Bad news for Miami Marlins starting pitcher
Peter Bendix is lucky not to have to worry about the rotation. In fact, the pitching staff in general looks very promising. There is an issue however and that's going to play a major part in how next season goes. Braxton Garrett is becoming more of an unknown as far as next season goes. How much will he pitch? Or will he even pitch at all?
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Braxton Garrett is injured.
Braxton Garrett barely pitched in the 2024 season. He pitched in just 7 games and was only able to provide 37.0 innings pitched. The result was a poor 5.35 ERA, but with a much more promising 3.82 FIP. He also still had a good 8.3 K/9 and an impressive 1.0 BB/9. It was a small sample size, but very promising indeed.
The obvious hope is that Garrett can get back to his breakout 2023 form. That season, he pitched to a 3.66 ERA/3.68 FIP, with 8.8 K/9 and 1.6 BB/9 in 31 games and 159.2 innings pitched. At the time, it genuinely looked like he was breaking out as a solid middle of the rotation arm. It's important to note however, that this was his career high. He only pitched in 88.0 innings in 2022.
Braxton Garrett has been officially diagnosed with an impingement in his throwing elbow. He's now going through a throwing program in The Fish's Florida Complex. It's clear that the Miami Marlins can't possibly be expecting much from him in the 2025 season. He will probably not get that many innings. Most likely he won't even come close to reaching 100 innings.
The bigger question in my opinion is seeing if the Miami Marlins will one day get a consistently healthy Braxton Garrett. He has the potential and the ability, but it's clear that for now it's hard to really bank on him as anything more than one of the mix of bottom of the rotation starters. I hope that he will end up eventually becoming consistently healthy. It would be a shame if he can never get to that point.
