Peter Bendix inherited the results of a pretty bad trade when he took over. He made his own controversial trade to resolve that situation. We still don't know what the results of all of that will be, but there's obviously a lot of thoughts and ideas that we can have watching it all unfold. Luis Arraez is a fan favorite former Miami Marlins player who will be hitting free agency after the season.
How will Luis Arraez's free agency go this upcoming off-season?
Luis Arraez was a major fan favorite for the Miami Marlins. It was a big surprise to many when Peter Bendix unceremoniously shipped out the former batting champ to the San Diego Padres. Fans were shocked by the trade, as the belief was that it would take a lot for another team to land him.
There's been a big disconnect between what the fans believed that Luis Arraez was worth, and what the industry apparently believed. This of course plays into his upcoming free agency as well. It's very early to think about this, but with a major injury luckily avoided last weekend it makes sense to think about what his future might hold.
The first question and to be honest problem with Arraez is which position he will play. He can technically play both first base and second base, but his defense at second base leaves a lot to be desired. This means that he's definitely going to be seen more as a first baseman. That said, he's not really a traditional first baseman as he has little to no power.
It's also been pointed out that Luis Arraez isn't a base stealing threat. The main and technically only thing that he does, and really well to be more precise is hit for contact at an elite level. He probably won't win a batting title this season, but if he does it will certainly increase his value. My guess now is that he's getting a 4 year deal at something like $60-70 million in total. He's certainly not coming close to $100 million and I question him receiving a 5 year deal.
