There are some good promotions coming up for the 2025 season. Sadly, that might be the only thing to look forward to this upcoming season. Hopefully some prospects will change at least some of the negative expectations this season has. It turned out that former Miami Marlins OF Starling Marte could've been traded this off-season. We thought that he was a trade candidate for The Fish. So what now?
Former Miami Marlins OF Starling Marte could be on the move.
Starling Marte was a fan favorite on the pre-Peter Bendix Miami Marlins. He played for the team in the second half of the 2020 season, and the first half of the 2021 season. Back in 2020, he batted .245/.286/.415, with 4 home runs and 13 RBI in 28 games and 112 AB. He was worth 0.5 WAR. In 2021, he batted an impressive .305/.405/.451 with 7 home runs and 25 RBI, in 64 games and 233 AB. He was worth an impressive 2.8 WAR.
Starling Marte was a top player on the Marlins, but of course he aged and is no longer the star player that he was with The Fish, and before that with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Marte has been playing for the division rival New York Mets since the 2022 season. He's batted .272/.328/.403, in 298 games and 1116 AB. He was worth 3.8 WAR for that time period.
The 2024 season wasn't good for Marte. That season he batted .269/.327/.388, with 7 home runs and 40 RBI in 94 games and 335 AB. He was worth 0.7 WAR for that performance. Marte is known as an injury-prone past his prime player at this point. The Kansas City Royals need OF help, and apparently have looked into a trade with the Mets for him.
If Starling Marte is indeed moved, the Mets will likely need to sign a DH, unless they will just rotate players through the position. Marte is a bad contract so I'm sure they can't wait to trade him, though it may not ultimately be to Kansas City after all. A return to
