The Baseball world is still trying to get past the big signing from yesterday, it's a questionable deal to say the least. The remaining news involving the Miami Marlins and the Philadelphia Phillies seem so miniscule in comparison, yet things are still happening and the news doesn't stop. The question is what do these latest bullpen news mean for both teams.
Bullpen news for the Miami Marlins and the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Miami Marlins have a much better bullpen than most people think. I also fully expect for there to be more help added as the off-season goes on. Peter Bendix is surely going to add upside arms and it'll be interesting to see how they do. In the meantime, The Fish let righty relief pitcher Mike Baumann go to NPB. That's not going to affect The Fish much, and I'm hoping that Baumann finds more success overseas.
Mike Baumann pitched to a 6.59 ERA/3.24 FIP, with 11.9 K/9 and 4.6 BB/9 in 11 games and 13.2 innings pitched. There was some potential there, but over his 4 year Major League career, the 29 year old has pitched to a 4.95 ERA/4.59 FIP. He may return to the Majors if he finds more success in Japan.
The Philadelphia Phillies may have signed a new closer. They signed Jordan Romano for one year, and an undisclosed amount that's more than the $7.75 million that he was going to earn in arbitration, before the Toronto Blue Jays strangely non-tendered him. Romano is a good signing for Philly. He may have pitched to a poor 6.59 ERA/6.17 FIP, with 8.6 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9 in 15 games and 13.2 innings pitched in 2024.
From 2020 to 2023, Romano had pitched to a 2.29 ERA/3.13 FIP, with 11.3 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 in 199 games and 200.2 innings pitched. He clearly has the stuff of a closer and if he's healthy he may just do that for Philly. He had 97 saves during that time period as well. It will be interesting to do how he'll do in 2025. The Miami Marlins should've been in on him as well, but it doesn't seem like Bendix was interested.
