Marlins division rivals are headed for major turnover
Miami Marlins division rivals the New York Mets are gone from the playoffs. They were just eliminated in the National League Championship series. As The Fish look for a new manager, there's obvious worry about how high-spending rivals like the Mets will spend the off-season. They have a lot of top free agents. It'll be a very busy off-season for the team in Citi Field this year.
Miami Marlins division rivals might not have a good off-season.
The New York Mets have almost their entire rotation hitting free agency this off-season. Sean Manaea is coming off of a strong 3.47 ERA/3.83 season with 9.1 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9, in 32 games and 181.2 innings pitched. He does however have a career 4.00 ERA/4.01 FIP in 9 seasons. I'm not sure if he'll ever be as good for them.
They got good seasons from Luis Severino and Jose Quintana. Severino has been injury-prone throughout his career and is coming off of a 3.91 ERA/4.21 FIP, with 8.0 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9 in 31 games and 182.0 innings pitched. Quintana had a 3.75 ERA/4.56 FIP, with 7.1 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9 in 31 games and 170.1 innings pitched. He's unlikely to repeat that ERA either.
The smart thing for the Mets to do is to let all of them go and look for others, as all of them are risky. They have the resources to sign top arms, but so do other teams so it's really a question mark who they will actually sign. Corbin Burnes will likely be their top target, but again other teams will be after him as well.
The lineup is an issue for the Mets too. 1B Pete Alonso is hitting free agency, and in my opinion isn't really worth whatever he will get. Still, losing him would be a big blow and they'll need another bat to replace him. They'll target Juan Soto, but he'll likely end up staying on THE New York team. I don't see any comparable bats out there. The Miami Marlins may not be big spenders, but the Mets will really have to spend in order to match the 89 win team from this season.
