Marlins division rivals end a very surprising series
I already wrote about this series earlier, but the exciting National League Division Series matchup between the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets has come to an end. Upcoming very interesting free agent first baseman Pete Alonso was a key figure, as was NL MVP candidate SS Francisco Lindor. The Mets shockingly upset Philly 3-1 in the series.
Miami Marlins division rivals had a memorable first series.
For the first time in Major League history, the Miami Marlins' division rivals Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets faced each other in a playoff series. Game 1 on October 5, saw the Mets relatively easily win 6-2. Game 2 the next night went down to the wire, until Philly tied the series with a 7-6 win. The first two games took place in Philadelphia.
The series shifted to New York, where the Mets comfortably won Game 3 with a 7-2 score on October 8. Last night, was Game 4. The Mets won comfortably yet again. This time with the score of 4-1. The Mets therefore won the series 3-1, and are now going to the National League Championship Series for the first time since 2015.
It's a bizarre turn of events for the Philadelphia Phillies. They seem to constantly do worse when expected to do better. Back in 2008, they were a team on the rise that won the World Series. They were the defending champions in 2009, but lost to the New York Yankees in the World Series. They had a better record in 2010 and looked like the favorites to win it all. They lost in the NLCS however. They had the best record in team history in 2011...only to lose in the NLDS.
History is repeating itself now. They just barely got into the playoffs in 2022, as the third Wild Card team in the first season with three Wild Cards. They ended up winning the pennant. The following season, they were the top Wild Card, but lost in the NLCS. This season, they won the division and had the second best record in the National League. They now got eliminated in the NLDS. Hopefully the Miami Marlins are at least in the playoffs next season.
