The Miami Marlins bullpen is very underrated. Looking at the advanced metrics and the potential of the group, there's definitely much more potential there than it might look like immediately. By the way, don't forget to look at the schedule and all of the great promotions being given out by the team. There is a free agent that it would make sense for The Fish to pursue: David Robertson.
The Miami Marlins should pursue David Robertson in free agency.
It would still make sense for the Miami Marlins to add relief pitchers that can be flipped at the Trade Deadline. David Robertson is a 39 year old righty, who was still effective in the 2024 season. Pitching for the Texas Rangers, he pitched to a 3.00 ERA/2.65 FIP, with 12.4 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 in 68 games and 72.0 innings pitched. He was worth 1.7 WAR for that performance.
Robertson has actually pitched for The Fish before, though not very successfully. He pitched for the team in the 2023 season. That time he pitched to a 5.06 ERA/3.49 FIP, with 12.7 K/9 and 5.1 BB/9 in 22 games and 21.1 innings pitched. He was worth a terrible -0.2 WAR for that performance.
Considering how good David Robertson did in the 2024 season, it's possible that he can at least come close this upcoming season. It certainly doesn't look like he's in decline yet despite his advanced age. Since he's currently still unsigned, it's very likely that he can be had for a pretty cheap deal as well. I'm definitely curious to see what his contract demands are, but he made $10 million on a one-year deal in 2024.
Should Peter Bendix check in with David Robertson and see how much it would cost to sign him? I definitely think that he should. What would he really lose by doing so? I suspect that at this point, Robertson won't be too picky and will have to accept a one-year deal for a few million dollars. I definitely see it as something doable if the Miami Marlins are interested of course.
