The Miami Marlins need to sign an inning-eating starting pitcher, yet neither Bruce Sherman or Peter Bendix seems to be doing anything to make it happen. All of the losses to the rotation make it clear that The Fish need an arm, yet nothing is happening. Yet the Tampa Bay Rays have even made a signing. They actually signed SS/2B Ha-Seong Kim for 2 years/$29 million.
Even other Florida teams are spending more than the Miami Marlins this off-season.
How long will we wait for Peter Bendix and Bruce Sherman to finally spend? The Miami Marlins badly need starting pitching help, and yet we're still here waiting. I'm sorry for being repetitive, but this issue seems to be never-ending.
Ha-Seong Kim is an interesting player, as he has some upside but is also starting the season on the injured list. He played for the San Diego Padres from the 2021 season, and emerged as one of the best middle infielders in the game. Kim played both second base and shortstop, specifically the latter in the 2024 season.
Kim batted just .242/.326/.380 in his four seasons in San Diego. His best season came in 2023, when he batted .260/.351/.398, with 17 home runs and 60 RBI in 152 games and 538 AB. He was worth 5.8 WAR. He was also very good in the 2022 season. In that season, he batted .251/.325/.383, with 11 home runs and 59 RBI in 150 games and 517 AB. This time, he was worth 4.9 WAR.
The 2024 season, saw Kim bat .233/.330/.370, with 11 home runs and 47 RBI in 121 games and 403 AB. He was worth 2,6 WAR. As you can clearly see, he wasn't much of a threat with the bat, and it was his defense that was elite. His dWARs from 2021 have been 2.1, 2.2, 2.1 and finally an uncharacteristically low 0.9 in 2024.
It's very good for the Tampa Bay Rays, to add such a defensive wizard to the team. It is however a knock on the Miami Marlins, that the team is still not spending on any free agents.
