There were rumors about the Miami Marlins making a trade with the Chicago Cubs. That trade didn't happen, but a signing, opened the way for a move that indeed finally take place. The Fish traded designated for assignment utility player Vidal Brujan to Chicago for first baseman Matt Mervis. Let's take a look at this trade.

The Miami Marlins made a trade with the Chicago Cubs that helps both sides.

Vidal Brujan was completely unneeded for the Miami Marlins. He batted .189/.261/.270 for his 4 year career. That's not very good to say the least. In 2024, he batted .222/.303/.319, with 2 home runs and 16 RBI in 102 games and 248 AB. That wasn't good either. He was designated for assignment because there was literally no real value in The Fish keeping him on the roster. His versatility however can potentially help the Chicago Cubs quite a bit.

Enter the newest member of the Miami Marlins: first baseman Matt Mervis. The 26 year old had some hype in the recent past. In 2023, he batted .282/.399/.533 with 22 home runs and 78 RBI for the Chicago Cubs in AAA. He did this in 100 games and 362 AB. He unfortunately was unable to translate that production in to the Major Leagues. He batted just .155/.222/.259 in his 36 games and 116 AB in the Major Leagues.

Matt Mervis has pretty interesting Exit Velocities. For example, it was 91.0 in 2023. We're talking about small sample sizes all around, but we're also talking about someone who seems to at least have some potential to be a useful Major Leaguer. I definitely see him as much more useful than Vidal Brujan would've been for the team. It's certainly a good move for the team.

The Miami Marlins added yet another unheralded bat to the team's roster. The latest addition has been first baseman Matt Mervis. How will he do with The Fish? We don't know, but he will surely get enough AB's in 2025 to show us what he can actually do to really help the team.
