The Miami Marlins are shopping pitcher Jesus Luzardo for the second consecutive offseason.Recent reports speculate the Fish have engaged the Chicago Cubs, who recently jolted their roster with a surprise Kyle Tucker blockbuster trade, in talks for their prized lefty. Bruce Levine of 670 The Score has specifically reported that at least one of Chicago's top-hitting prospects, Owen Caissie or James Triantos, would be shipped to Miami if the deal were to go through.
Landing a player with Caissie's upside and pedigree would be a slam dunk for the Marlins. The Canadian outfielder has massive upside as a power hitter. His elite exit velocities which as "some of the highest in the game" give him legitimate 30-40 home run upside at the major league level. At just 22 years old, Caissie also has room to develop even more strength and power.
The left-handed slugger also has the defensive upside to fair well at LoanDepot Park. While he profiles much more as a corner outfielder than a centerfielder, Caissie has solid speed and a top-tier arm, posting an impressive ten outfield assists in 101 games last year.
Owen Caissie would form a truly dynamic prospect core alongside sluggers like Deyvinson De Los Santos, Agustin Ramirez, Kyle Stowers, and Connor Norby.
Already in the top 35 of MLB.com's Top 100 prospects, Caissie would immediately contend (and likely surpass) left-handed pitcher Thomas White (#46 overall) as Miami's top prospect. While the Fish have collected a small treasure trove of high-upside players in their farm system, the club still lacks a true headliner with clear superstar potential. Caissie would instantly fill this role!
The Cubs also appear to have a logjam in their outfield. Tucker and budding star Pete Crow-Armstrong have two of the three spots locked up. Additionally, Chicago has Cody Bellinger, Ian Happ, Seiya Suzuki to find playing time for in 2025 and beyond.
The club should consider trading an outfielder for a pitcher to play alongside the star tandem of Justin Steele and Shota Imanaga. Perhaps Caissie, who has no natural path toward MLB at-bats is the most sensible option.
If these reports are true, Marlins' President Peter Bendix and his team should do everything in their power to capitalize on their valuable trade candidate. Transforming Luzardo into a prospect like Caissie would be a massive (and much needed) win for the franchise!
