Just recently, there were two leading candidates for the vacant Miami Marlins managerial job. Both are now out of the running. It all started when Will Venable withdrew his candidacy from the job. We now know that Craig Albernaz withdrew his own candidacy as well. This is surprising news, but it isn't as bad as some might think.
Craig Albernaz will not manage the Miami Marlins in the 2025 season.
Will Venable was pursued by multiple Major League teams over the last few years. He is believed to have been a manager by now, had he actually agreed to take a particular job. We now know that Craig Albernaz has decided to follow his lead. He will not be managing the Miami Marlins in the 2025 season.
It was a bit surprising, as Albernaz was connected to the Marlins based on his time with Gabe Kapler on the San Francisco Giants. He also spent time in the Tampa Bay Rays Minor League system, which means that he has experience working under Peter Bendix. This seemed to make his perhaps even the more likely candidate for the job when compared to Venable.
Craig Albernaz however chose to stay as a bench coach on the Cleveland Guardians. The reason as to his decision has not been given, and probably will not be revealed at this point. He could've had many reasons for his behavior. It's possible that he's simply confortable in Cleveland and feels that he has some unfinished business there. He interviewed for the Marlins job for a reason, so him suddenly changing his mind is likely more to do with him not wanting to leave his current position.
It's possible that Albernaz wants to manage Cleveland in the future. It's also possible that his family played a role in the matter as well. Maybe moving to Miami is not practical for him, and he prefers to stay in Cleveland. I can't possibly understand that reasoning, but to each his own. Ultimately, Craig Albernaz won't manage the Miami Marlins, but someone such as Los Angeles Dodgers first base coach Clayton McCullough might.
