It's not a secret that the Miami Marlins need a new starting pitcher. The Fish have been hit by more injuries than expected, but there's still time to at least improve the situation. There's need for another arm to eat innings, and while it will most likely be someone of the less expensive variety, there was actually a potential ace available to the team for cheap!
The Miami Marlins will not be bringing in Roki Sasaki.
Roki Sasaki could potentially be a future ace in the Major Leagues. Considering he's available for the money that goes to international prospects, there was no excuse for why the Miami Marlins couldn't get involved in the bidding for him. The Fish were never rumored as suitors, so I have no idea if Peter Bendix ever actually got involved or had any intention to do so.
It's pretty logical to assume, that Sasaki probably wants to sign with a contending team. That's certainly why the Los Angeles Dodgers are one of the three finalists for his services. The San Diego Padres are not contenders, but were the closest to actually eliminating the Dodgers in the 2024 playoffs.
The Toronto Blue Jays are the other surprising finalists for Roki Sasaki's services. I'm not sure why he's considering to go there, as the team is far from contenders and I have no idea why he would choose them over the likes of the New York Yankees. The New York Mets certainly look better than Toronto too, and both New York teams have apparently been rejected by Sasaki.
It sounds like Sasaki will probably make his decision in the near future. Most likely in the next few days. If I had to guess, he probably will end up with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The sad part for me is that the Miami Marlins are not that much worse than Toronto, and I don't understand why Bendix hasn't made a stronger push (assuming that is that he did not). I guess we again have to wait and see who The Fish will end up bringing in.
