This hasn't been an ideal off-season for the Miami Marlins. Spring Training isn't showing us a promising outlook for the season at all. At least there's no worry that the team will be leaving Florida. Peter Bendix is spearheading a rebuild that hopefully will actually lead to sustainable winning. The question is if the fanbase has the patience to get through that.
The Miami Marlins should consider signing Alex Verdugo.
It's actually quite surprising that Alex Verdugo is still unsigned. The OF wasn't impressive in 2024, which is probably the biggest reason why it is so. In 2024, he batted .233/.291/.356, with 13 home runs and 61 RBI in 149 games and 559 AB. He was worth a below average 0.8 WAR.
Verdugo was much better in 2023, that season he was worth 2.6 WAR. That season, he batted .264/.324/.421, with 13 home runs and 54 RBI in 142 games and 546 AB. He was certainly better that season. He also made $8.7 million in 2024 with the New York Yankees. Certainly that salary isn't happening now. He can however still get a deal for a couple million, and why not have that come from The Fish?
The Miami Marlins don't have a good out field situation at the moment. There's certainly room for improvement and adding another bat to the mix will certainly not hurt the team. Since it would be a one-year deal, he can either just be let go after the season, released during it or flipped at the Trade Deadline. Either way, it's just one year so there really is no reason for Bendix to not bring him in.
If The Fish don't bring him in, it might take an injury on another team for him to receive a Major League deal. He might have to settle for a Minor League deal otherwise, which is exactly why the Miami Marlins should be in the lead if there's interest in signing Alex Verdugo. Any way that you look at it, it's a good idea to sign him. Hopefully Bendix agrees and will see about adding him for a one year and a couple million dollars.
