The Miami Marlins rotation seemed to be the focus this off-season. The lineup however arguably needed more help. A particular hitter is especially intriguing going forward. I'm talking about RF Jesus Sanchez who is facing what increasingly appears to be a make or break year in the 2025 season. What can we expect from the middle of the order bat?
Jesus Sanchez will play a big role for the Miami Marlins this season.
Jesus Sanchez was once a top prospect and was expected to make a difference for the Miami Marlins. The 27 year old right fielder is under team control through the 2027 season. This means that he's still under control for three seasons.
He debuted in the 2020 season, batting .040/.172/.080 with 0 home runs and 2 RBI in 10 games and 25 AB. That wasn't an impressive debut, but he was able to do better the following season. Following that up in the 2021 season, he batted .251/.319/.489 with 14 home runs and 36 RBI in 64 games and 277 AB. He was worth 1.2 WAR for that performance, and the power potential was intriguing.
In 2022, Sanchez batted .214/.280/.403, with 13 home runs and 36 RBI in 98 games and 313 AB. He was worth 1.0 WAR for that performance. This was worse than his 2021 production, but once again there were flashes of his potential there. Following that up in the 2023 season, he batted .253/.327/.450, with 14 home runs and 52 RBI in 125 games and 360 AB. He was worth 1.7 WAR this time.
Jesus Sanchez finally got enough playing time in 2024. This time he played in 149 games and received 489 AB. This time he batted .252/.313/.417, with 18 home runs and 64 RBI and was worth 0.7 WAR.
It's clear that Jesus Sanchez has power potential, but he's yet to put it all together for the Miami Marlins. The question is will he finally do it in the upcoming season? He did impress with his 92.3 Exit Velocity, so maybe a big season is finally in the cards if he receives enough playing time.
