An interesting relief pitcher is currently available for the Miami Marlins. Peter Bendix and The Fish already passed on bringing back a fan favorite. Right now, the priority for the team should be bringing in an inning-eating starting pitcher. Bringing in a relief pitcher that can be moved at the Trade Deadline, could be a very useful strategy as well. One such reliever could very well be lefty Tyler Matzek.
Miami Marlins should look into signing Tyler Matzek.
Tyler Matzek is an interesting pitcher to look at. The 34 year old missed the 2023 season due to injury and wa spretty poor in 2024. Last season, in that aforementioned 2024 season, he pitched to a 9.90 ERA/5.97 FIP, with an impressive 9.0 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9 in 11 games and 10.0 innings pitched.
More intriguing, is what Matzek did previously in his career. In the shortened 2020 season, he pitched for the Atlanta Braves. He pitched to a 2.79 ERA/1.92 FIP, with 13.3 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 in 21 games and 29.0 innings pitched. In the 2021 season, he pitched to a 2.57 ERA/3.20 FIP, with an impressive 11.0 K/9 but a poor 5.3 BB/9. Finally, in the 2022 season, he pitched to a 3.50 ERA/4.49 FIP, with 7.4 K/9 and 6.0 BB/9 in 42 games and 43.2 innings pitched.
The 2022 season was not one to remember for Tyler Matzek if we're being honest, but I do suspect that he pitched injured during that time. The important thing is of course that he had excellent strikeout rates and ERA's during his time with the Atlanta Braves. In fact, his run from 2020 to 2022 came with that one team.
It certainly appears that the Atlanta Braves are not interested in bringing Tyler Matzek back. The Miami Marlins on the other hand could use another reliever, that can then be flipped at the Trade Deadline. That would be a smart move for the team, as it would lead to yet another boost for the team's improving farm system. If he doesn't deliver, then it would just be a one-year deal.
