Miami Marlins should look into signing a reliever

In the last few days, the Miami Marlins lost a relief pitcher to the Philadelphia Phillies. It would definitely make sense for The Fish to pursue more help, though this was just losing a waived depth piece. A reunion with a catcher in the off-season would be nice, but a bullpen signing now could really help the team, and potentially give an arm to trade at the Trade Deadline.

Hector Neris would add experience to the Miami Marlins bullpen.

Righty relief pitcher Hector Neris has experience and might still be able to do something of value in the Major Leagues. Neris is 35 years old and was just released by ironically the Philadelphia Phillies. To be fair, he was...not very good for the Atlanta Braves this season. He pitched to a 45.00 ERA/16.83 FIP, with 9.0 K/9 and 9.0 BB/9 in 2 games and an inning pitched. This is a very short sample size.

Back in the 2024 season split between the Chicago Cubs and the Houston Astros, Neris pitched to a 4.10 ERA/4.28 FIP, with 9.7 K/9 and 4.2 BB/9 in 62 games and 59.1 innings pitched. That was a much better performance. The control wasn't too good and of course neither the ERA or FIP were impressive, but the strikeout rate was still very good.

The 2023 season with Houston stands out to me. That season, he pitched to a 1.71 ERA/3.83 FIP, with 10.1 K/9 and 4.1 BB/9 in 71 games and 68.1 innings pitched. That performance is what makes me intrigued about what he might still offer the Miami Marlins. He's a former closer who made $9 million last season, but he surely can't come close to that number in the 2025 season.

Hector Neris offers veteran experience and if he actually becomes productive, he could be flipped at the Trade Deadline to a different team for prospects. There seems to be no reason why Peter Bendix can't look into signing the veteran relief pitcher to help the team. There doesn't seem to be a reason why it wouldn't help the Miami Marlins to do so.
