It seems like injuries are sadly all over the place this season, affecting former Miami Marlins players, but also current ones. With all of these injuries hitting teams, pitching depth is more important than ever. It's certainly useful for every team to bring in more starting pitchers, and the same of course applies to The Fish. It just so happens, that there's an interesting arm available right now.
Could Spencer Turnbull be a good option for the Miami Marlins?
Spencer Turnbull is available as a free agent, and is now throwing for teams. Why can't the Miami Marlins look into him? Turnbull was actually very good for the Philadelphia Phillies last season. He pitched to a 2.65 ERA/3.85 FIP, with 9.6 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9, in 17 games and 54.1 innings pitched. He did only start 7 of those games, pitching in relief in the other 10 games. He finished the season injured, which is why he ultimately didn't end up signing in the off-season.
The 2023 season of course isn't a very promising reminder of what Turnbull can do as well. That season, he pitched to a 7.26 ERA/5.55 FIP, with 7.0 K/9 and 4.4 BB/9, in 7 games and 31.0 innings pitched. Overall for his career, Turnbull has pitched to a 4.26 ERA/3.83 FIP, with 8.5 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9 in 78 games and 356.2 innings pitched. He pitched for the Detroit Tigers from 2018 to 2023, and of course for the Philadelphia Phillies last season.
I would of course not expect much from Spencer Turnbull in the 2025 season, but he can still eat innings and help the Miami Marlins rotation to get through the season, without overworking the bullpen. It would be a good signing for Peter Bendix to make. I don't really see a good reason why signing him wouldn't work for the team. It would likely not take more than a couple million to sign him, on a one year deal. It shouldn't be too expensive for The Fish. Come on Bendix look into this! What do you think about this?
