The future of Major League Baseball in Florida is ongoing. Neither the Miami Marlins or the Tampa Bay Rays are spending much, which is not ideal of course. We now have even more news on this worrying ongoing situation. It could be that Bruce Sherman will be the only Florida team owner and the return of the Florida Marlins could be at hand. For bette ror for worse.
Is the return of the Florida Marlins imminent?
Is it possible that the Miami Marlins will once again be the only team in Florida? In shocking news, the Tampa Bay Rays seemingly closed the door on at least a new stadium in Tampa. A decision that almost certainly affects the team's future in Florida, unless they change ownership. Here's what the team's current ownership said about the situation:
As we all recover from impacts of the hurricanes, we are incredibly grateful for the support from our fans and the wider Tampa Bay community. … After careful deliberation, we have concluded that we cannot move forward with the new ballpark and development project at this moment. A series of events beginning in October that no one could have anticipated led to this difficult decision.
Our commitment to the vitality and success of the Rays organization is unwavering. We continue to focus on finding a ballpark solution that serves the best interests of our region, Major League Baseball and our organization. The City of St. Petersburg is currently advancing plans to restore Tropicana Field for the 2026 season. We are thankful for their efforts and are excited to return to our home field next spring.
This is definitely pretty shocking news. I feel bad for the team's fanbase and the future of the sport in the Tampa area. I'm certainly not excited that much about the fact that the Miami Marlins may become the only team in the state. That said, there's plenty of fans who wouldn't mind seeing the "Florida Marlins" name back on the team's uniforms.
It's certainly an ongoing situation with the team, but it will be very intriguing going forward to see what happens with the Rays and whether they will relocate or end up with a new ownership group that will keep them in Florida.
