One of the worst signings in Miami Marlins history was signing Avisail Garcia. Avi's struggles likely played a part in Bruce Sherman's decision to put a more experienced PBO above Kim Ng. This decision then of course also led to Kim Ng's departure from the Fish. RF Jesus Sanchez has been the starter in 2023 for most of the season. What happens in 2024? Will Avi return to RF or is Jesus Sanchez the starter? Or is the answer neither one?
Will Jesus Sanchez be a starter for the Miami Marlins in 2024 or not?
Avisail Garcia has been a complete disaster for the Miami Marlins over the last two seasons. He batted .215/.260/.316 in 135 games and 465 AB during that time. Jesus Sanchez in the meantime debuted with The Fish in 2020, and batted .040/.172/.080, with 0 home runs and 2 RBI in 10 games and 25 AB.
In 2021, Jesus Sanchez followed that up with a .251/.319/.489 batting line, with 14 home runs and 36 RBI in 64 games and 227 AB. This was a more promising performance than the previous season of course. In 2022, Sanchez batted .214/.280/.403 with 13 home runs and 36 RBI, in 98 games and 313 AB. The power was promising in the AB's, but the contact was obviously not sufficient for a starting player.
In the 2023 season, Jesus Sanchez batted .253/.327/.450 with 14 home runs and 52 RBI in 125 games and 360 AB. Sanchez's Exit Velocity has ranged from 95.5 to 90.2 to 89.4 to 90.0 mph over the last four seasons. There seems to be some potential with the power, though we haven't yet seen how he would do over the course of the entire season. Should we find out?
Does it make sense to give someone else a shot instead? Or perhaps Avisail Garcia can win the starting job back? The Miami Marlins should look into trading Avi in a bad contract swap, and also look for any upgrade via the trade and free agent markets. I would only go with Jesus Sanchez if there are no better options.
