The Miami Marlins are not bringing back Jorge Soler. The 2023 DH for The Fish signed with the San Francisco Giants for 3 years/$42 million. I just wrote about him yesterday and pondered about The Fish's chances of him coming back as well. Soler is now the new DH of the San Francisco Giants and we have quite a bit to unpack here...

Jorge Soler is not coming back to the Miami Marlins in 2024.

I never wanted the Miami Marlins to re-sign Jorge Soler and neither did many others. I never even wanted The Fish to sign him in the first place! He was incredibly inconsistent and injury-prone. Those are two of the worst attributes that a player can have. He was also terrible defensively (career -10.2 dWAR). It was all about power with him.

Jorge Soler's two seasons with the Miami Marlins were a perfect example of this... He was terrible in 2022, batting .207/.295/400, with 13 home runs and 34 RBI in 72 games and 270 AB. It was a different story for him in 2023, when he batted .250/.341/.512, with 36 home runs and 75 RBI in 137 games and 504 AB.

It's hard to tell who the real Jorge Soler is. Is it the .249/.326/.424 bat from 2014-2018, the .228/.326/.443 bat from 2020, the .192/.288/.370 bat from the first half of 2021? Or is he the .265/.354/.569 bat from 2019 and the .269/.358/.524 bat from the second half of 2021?

He's so inconsistent, that San Francisco will surely regret signing him for three years. The one thing that went wrong is the Miami Marlins not issuing him a QO. It's not clear if San Francisco would've been willing to give up a draft pick to sign him, but I would've been fine with Jorge Soler on a one year deal.

I wonder why Peter Bendix didn't offer Soler a QO and whether that would have affected Soler's current contract. At this time, it looks as a mistake to me. I'm under the impression that the Miami Marlins would've been better off with the draft pick or a one-year deal with him.
