It looks like we now have an idea of what else went wrong during the opening series. No, I'm not talking about Bruce Sherman not spending enough on the team, that's an annual issue at this point. I'm not talking about the bullpen either, though that was probably the main reason for the losses. At least the schedule isn't the worst going forward. Anyway, Miami Marlins CF Jazz Chisholm Jr. has some things to say...

Jazz Chisholm Jr. has his own explanation as to why the Marlins lost four in a row.

The Miami Marlins had a terrible start to the season. It's so bad, that I just don't even know how to put it into words. Was it bad luck? Was it the bullpen? I believe that it's all of that, though Jazz Chisholm Jr. has an interesting take of his own. The outspoken star blames the loanDepot Park roof being opened as the reason for the losing streak.

Is Jazz wrong? The offense, that was seen as subpar prior to the season, scored 17 runs in 4 games. That would normally have been enough to win at least two of those games. The record should be 1-4 according to Baseball-Reference. So what exactly did Jazz have to say?

"I feel like the shadows were really -- we're not used to playing in shadows. We normally play inside every day. So, when we get a shadow for three of the four games at home for the first time of the season, it's kind of hard to adjust to. You know, we're used to the roof being closed and being able to see every at-bat. It's kind of tough to see when it's black out there and you're facing a guy throwing 101 [mph], you know?"

Research shows that Jazz has a point about shadows affecting the playing. That said, it's been pointed out in the CBS article that the Miami Marlins do play road games in open stadiums. It makes you wonder if the effect was big enough to cause all of those losses. I do however see "familiarity" as a reason. It's possible that the familiarity with the stadium was the problem, with it almost feeling like a different place.
