Marlins division rival news: Major option decisions
There's some unexpected news on the Miami Marlins as the off-season is coming up after the playoffs. For one thing, there's going to be a managerial search. It does however make sense to also keep an eye on the team's division rivals. The Atlanta Braves in particular have some major option decisions on three of their players. Who are the players? DH Marcell Ozuna, RP Aaron Bummer and C Travis D'Arnaud.
What option decisions will the Miami Marlins rivals make?
Designated Hitter Marcell Ozuna had a big year for the Atlanta Braves. He has a $16 million team option for next season, which is actually a pay cut. He made $18 million this season. Ozuna was worth 4.3 WAR, after batting .302/.378/.546, with 39 home runs and 104 RBI. He did it in 162 games and 606 AB. This was a great season for the former Miami Marlins hitter. It's now expected that Atlanta will pick up the option. I can see someone traded, as they have another former Marlin in Jorge Soler, who is best suited for DH duty.
Another player is Relief Pitcher Aaron Bummer. Bummer pitched to a 3.58 ERA/2.23 FIP, with 11.2 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 in 56 games and 55.1 innings pitched. It was a strong season, where he clearly was actually unlucky. He actually should've been better based on the FIP. He was worth 0.6 WAR for that performance. He earned $5.5 million this season, but will make $7.25 million after the team option is predicatbly picked up.
The third Braves player whose team option is expected to be picked up is Catcher Travis D'Arnaud. D'Arnaud batted .238/.302/.436, with 15 home runs and 48 RBI in 99 games and 307 AB. He was worth 1.1 WAR and earned $8 million this season. The team option for $8 million next season is apparently expected to be picked up.
The Miami Marlins will have a big hill to climb next season, but Atlanta will have a nice core to compete with, along with these three players who are expected to be back next season.
