Marlins will now need a new manager in 2025
This was a year in the making... As the Miami Marlins parted ways with GM Kim Ng, it seemed only a matter of time until manager Skip Schumaker would find himself out of the door as well. This seemed especially true since Skip was loyal to Ng and wasn't happy with the way that she left. Rumors were circulating for a while and now they sadly finally came true.
The Miami Marlins will need a new manager in 2025.
I wasn't a fan of Kim Ng as the GM. She made too many bad moves and the farm system completely collapsed with her in charge. This was a big reason why Miami Marlins owner Bruce Sherman decided that it was time to move on from her. He didn't actually fire her, but hire a President of Baseball Operations above her. That person was of course Peter Bendix. Someone to oversee Ng's work was the right call, but it also predictably sent her packing as she quit.
Skip Schumaker did great in his first season as the Miami Marlins manager. He won the National League Manager of the Year award as he led the team to an 84-78 win-loss record and a playoff appearance. This season he led the team to a disastrous 60-100 win-loss record before leaving the team to deal with a family matter. Bench coach Luis Urueta took over as the interim manager.
The important part was that Skip told the players that he won't be back next season. Why did he decide to leave? Maybe he doesn't want to be on a team that he doesn't see as competitive next season. Maybe he just wants a change. The Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago White Sox are two of the rumored teams to be interested in him. It's hard to see how either, especially the latter are upgrades over the Miami Marlins however.
I'm thankful to Skip Schumaker for his work, but wish that he stayed and proved to be more loyal to the players and the fanbase. After all isn't staying loyal through the hard times a true sign of greatness?
